Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Waffle House is famed for more than just its all-day breakfast. The restaurant chain’s preparedness for natural disasters, which allows its locations to stay open throughout weather crises or open shortly after, has earned it a storm distinction with FEMA. Today, the Waffle House system is more than 1,900 locations in 25 states. A golden vision rises above the roadway, beckoning the weary traveler or the hungry local.
The South's favorite diner and an Atlanta original, Waffle House has been providing customers with the consummate short-order culinary experience since the first restaurant opened in Avondale Estates in 1955. The bustling staff, open kitchen, jukebox tunes, sizzling grill, and 24-hour convenience all contribute to WaHo's singular charm. Waffle House has a reputation for omnipresence in the South and that seems especially true in the Atlanta area. The Atlanta quad has nearly three times the number of restaurants as the next highest. And that next highest quad, Cartersville, actually contains most of the north Atlanta metro area.

In 1955, two Georgia neighbors opened up a restaurant that would change the world. Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner were living in Avondale Estates, GA, when they decided to open a 24-hour, sit-down restaurant for their friends and neighbors, focused on people on both sides of the counter. That first restaurant opened the door to create the Waffle House brand that you see today. Six lanes of pavement isn’t normally prime dining real estate, but where is a freeway view more appropriate than Waffle House?

In fact, a measurement tool called the Waffle House Index can be used to analyze a storm’s severity and the effect it can have on communities. Its classifications of green, yellow, and red indicate how severe a storm is based on how well Waffle House can operate during it. The term was coined by former FEMA administrator Craig Fugate following the Joplin tornado in May 2011. The storm, which caused over $2.8 billion in damage and 158 casualties, was not enough to close down either of the Waffle House locations in Joplin. The breakfast chain remained open throughout the storm, with a prepared limited menu that allowed it to serve food even during power outages.
